Our Mission: Professional Education in a Liberal Arts Setting

At the 91¶¶Òõ School of Architecture, our mission is to educate undergraduate and graduate students in built environment disciplines who engage the world passionately and intelligently. As a professional school that values the liberal arts, our programs set a rigorous studio-based curriculum within an educational environment that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and speculation.

Our Values: Architecture as a Disciplined Practice

From interior objects to urban environments, we value design and construction as a disciplined practice – the means by which we engage the world at a range of scales with conceptual and formal clarity, disciplinary consciousness, social agency, and material speculation. We believe that education offers a way of making and thinking that enables our students and graduates to do good in the world. Our shared values allow differences between and among our programs to become opportunities for productive exchange, collaboration, and growth.

Facilities & Technology

Our programs are housed in an innovative LEED-certified facility that was once the University’s gymnasium and natatorium.  In-house, we have a digital fabrication lab, wood and metal fabrication shops, construction lab, and CNC lab.

Center for Architectural Studies

In some cases, where students learn can be as important as what they learn. Where it can be a modern urban center or a historic city like Florence, or it can be a building so innovative in its design that it becomes a partner in the educational experience. Such is the case with 91¶¶Òõ’s Center for Architectural Studies, which houses the School of Architecture.

The School of Architecture is a state-of-the-art example of sustainable design. It's a spacious, adaptive re-use of 91¶¶Òõ's former gymnasium and natatorium. It features:

  • Two levels of open studios
  • Wood and metal shops
  • Digital Fabrication Lab
  • Plaster-casting room
  • Printers and plotters
  • Construction Materials Lab
  • Reference library

A two-story commons under a continuous skylight harvests abundant natural light throughout the day and serves as the building's "agora" - an open, shared, central space for educational exchanges among students and faculty. This is an ideal place for group discussions, debates, displays, and project critiques.

Every student is provided an individual work space with a drawing board, personal storage area, pin-up wall, and space for a laptop.

It features:

  • Two levels of studio space
  • Fully-equipped woodshop
  • Plaster-casting room
  • Printers and plotters
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) lab
  • Student lounge
  • Reference library

Cloud Room

The Cloud Room (CAS 251) is located on the second level of the Center for Architectural Studies, above the lobby. Including only chairs without desks, it is not considered a traditional classroom space. The Cloud Room is used by the School of Architecture as a meeting space and as a location for architecture lectures and guest speakers.

Clubs

The School of Architecture is a community. At 91¶¶Òõ, students can join collective and discipline-specific student organizations that foster leadership, creativity, and professional development. Clubs and honor societies support students across all architecture programs, including:

  • American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)

  • American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)

  • Associated Builders and Contractors Student Network (ABC)

  • Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter (HFH)

  • International Interior Design Association (IIDA)

  • National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS)

  • Tau Sigma Delta, Upsilon Alpha Chapter (Honor Society)

  • Women in Architecture and Design (WIAD)

Joining a club is a great way to network, gain real-world insights, and build your resume as you pursue your architecture degree.

Student Resources

Architecture Kit

Students in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Virtual Architecture are required to purchase an Architecture Kit containing essential tools for studio courses. These kits may be ordered through the 91¶¶Òõ Gear Shop, and students should direct any questions to architecture@marywood.edu.

Laptop Requirement

To support success in our architecture and construction programs, all incoming students in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Virtual Architecture, and Construction Management are required to bring a laptop that meets our minimum hardware specifications. These systems are selected for compatibility with software and alignment with the PC-based platforms used throughout campus and the design industry.

Recommended:

  • Intel Core Ultra 7/9 HX, Intel i7/i9 HX, or AMD Ryzen 7/9 Memory

  • 32 GB RAM minimum; 64 GB preferred if budget allows

  • 1 TB SSD minimum; 2 TB preferred

  • Dedicated NVIDIA RTX or RTX Professional Series GPU with 8 GB VRAM minimum

  • Recommended: NVIDIA RTX 4060 (8 GB VRAM) or higher

    • Not Supported Integrated graphics solutions

  • 16-inch, high-resolution display

  • 4-year accidental damage/support plan

Travel Opportunities

Study abroad is a key part of the educational experience in many of our architecture degree programs. Students in the Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Interior Architecture programs are required to spend one semester abroad in Florence, Italy during their third year.

Construction Management and Virtual Architecture students also have access to a wide range of global learning opportunities. Study abroad experiences broaden students’ understanding of buildings across cultures, geographies, and building traditions.

If you are unable to participate in a required study abroad program, contact the School Director (architecture@marywood.edu) for exemption options and alternate experiences.

Architecture Licensure

Students enrolled in 91¶¶Òõ’s NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program can begin preparing for professional licensure from day one. We provide step-by-step guidance on:

  • Establishing your NCARB Record

  • Completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)

  • Preparing for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)

  • Navigating state-specific registration processes

Interior Architecture Certification

Students pursuing the Bachelor or Master of Interior Architecture can qualify for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification. Our program provides the necessary educational foundation, and our NCIDQ campus coordinator helps students establish their accounts and prepare for certification exams.

Construction Management Certification

Students in the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management (BSCM) program are guided through the process of becoming Certified Construction Managers (CCM). Certification is administered by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and requires a combination of an accredited architecture, engineering, or construction degree, experience hours, and successful completion of exams.

The CM Program Coordinator supports students as they begin the certification process.

Virtual Architecture

There is no formal licensure required for careers in Film and Game Environment Design, which are the focus of our Bachelor of Virtual Architecture (BVA) program. However, students gain real-world preparation through access to top-tier faculty, portfolio development, and professional network connections.

The V-ARCH Program coordinator helps guide students as they identify career paths and prepare for work in emerging digital design industries.
